1883 Hawaiian Half Dollar PCGS EF40/CAC Old Green Holder (OGH) Sold
This is a beautiful, original surfaced Hawaiian half dollar in a PCGS old green holder (OGH). This is also a one-year type and is the only officially released half dollar by the Kingdom of Hawaii. The obverse features King Kalakaua I while the reverse is circled by the phrase UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO, which is commonly translated as "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness" and is also the current motto for the state of Hawaii. The surfaces of this coin are a beautiful deep brown with dirt, gunk and crud stuffed into all the nooks and crannies. These half dollars are not all that difficult to find, but to find one with original skin is far more challenging than their price levels would suggest, which is simply a testament to how much the price of this issue has been beaten up by inferior, dipped out specimens. My copy of the last PCGS population report issued prior to the change from the old green holder to the blue holder (yes, I have a copy and use it) shows 15 EF40 coins...I wonder how many still survive in their old green holders? Regardless, an original Hawaiian half dollar in an OGH with a CAC sticker is mighty cool. Sold
